Henry .17HMR Lever Action Octagon Rifle – Frontier Model

But there are still a few frontier staples that were so effective and ahead of their time that they remain in use today. Take, for instance, the intimidating octagonal barrels commonly found on the repeating rifles of that period. These heavy-duty workhorses sported added mass and extra weight to aid in heat absorption, making them the forerunners to the bull barrels used on modern target and varmint rifles. Henry .17HMR Lever Action Octagon Rifle – Frontier Model

So in honor of this timeless barrel style, Henry replaced the standard round barrel normally used on their world-famous .22 LR and .22 Magnum rifles with a classic 20-inch octagonal model, like those favored by the cowpunchers, lawmen, homesteaders, and outlaws who blazed the trail westward across America. Henry rounded out this traditional look with an easy-to-adjust Marbles semi-buckhorn rear sight with a diamond insert and a highly visible brass beaded front sight seated in standard 3/8 inch dovetail slots. A metal barrel band secures both the barrel and the high-capacity tubular magazine to the highgrade American walnut stock.

Like stagecoaches, swinging saloon doors and Pony Express riders, there are many innovations of the Old West that have long faded from use and live on only in Western movies and history books.

Made In America And Priced Right. Henry Repeating Arms takes its name from Benjamin Tyler Henry, the man who patented history’s first repeating rifle in 1860. In honor of this iconic inventor, the modern-day firearms manufacturer resurrected the Henry name in 1996 and currently produces its rifles in two different plants — one located in Bayonne, New Jersey, and the other in Rice Lake, Wisconsin.

Today, Henry ranks as the number five leading long-gun producer in the United States, quite an impressive accomplishment considering the company doesn’t even produce shotguns, bolt-action hunting guns, or tactical firearms, but rather specializes in the nostalgic lever and pump-action rifles.

Inspired by the original Henry rifle, the Frontier series is a Western-style lever action .17 rimfire capable of rapid, accurate shooting. Any fan of John Wayne will immediately recognize the profile and styling of this gun.

The rifle has a nice heft and solid feel to it, enough that it will never be mistaken for a toy. It has a distinctive look popular among Old West enthusiasts. Owing to its huge popularity is the fact that the Henry is anywhere from one-half to one-third the price of its nearest competitors and is entirely made in the U.S.A.

At the heart of the design is an extremely smooth action. It is so smooth in fact that many first-timers simply cannot believe the gun has any internal parts.

The Henry Frontier Octagon is fed through a tubular magazine located beneath the barrel and is capable of holding 12- rounds. Loading is fairly straightforward — simply twist the magazine cap and remove the inner brass magazine tube, then begin dropping rounds in through the loading port. Once fully loaded, replace the inner magazine tube and twist-lock it back in place.

Already considered to be the most accurate rimfire cartridge ever produced, the .17HMR incorporates a .17 caliber bullet onto a necked down .22Magnum casing. This high-velocity combination produces a scorching muzzle velocity of 2,550 fps with a 17- grain spitzer-type bullet. The flat trajectory makes it the ideal long-range varmint cartridge for coyotes, skunks, prairie dogs, Nutria (Myocastor coypus), crows, or squirrels.

A 20″ heavy octagon barrel provides excellent downrange accuracy. The rear sight is a Marbles fully adjustable semi-buckhorn and the brass beaded front sight is well defined. All steel parts, such as the barrel and lever, wear a deep-blued finish.

The receiver is black anodized. Weighing in at 6.25 pounds, the rifle can attribute its lightweight and fast handling to an aluminum alloy receiver that has an integral rimfire scope rail for adding optics. The buttstock and forend are American walnuts that give the rifle a very pleasing and stylish appearance.

While the Henry Frontier Octagon .17HMR lacks manual safety, it does have a half-cock safety that acts as a firing pin block and works effectively at preventing the gun from discharging if dropped or banged. A transfer bar safety prevents the gun from being discharged unless the hammer has been cocked all the way back, then the trigger depressed.

The rifle automatically returns to the safe position if the hammer is lowered manually. For repair or maintenance, this family-owned company arguably carries the best no-nonsense lifetime warranty in the industry.

Overall, the Henry Frontier Octagon .17HMR is an exceptionally smooth, accurate, and reliable rimfire rifle made entirely here in the U.S.A. by craftsmen who take pride in their products.
